Staff Biographies
Stephen Langer, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and the director of the Northwest Brief Therapy Training Center (nwbttc.com) since 1994. He has used solution-focused methods for over 20 years, training with the founders of the solution-focused approach, Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the 1980's and 1990's and collaborating with them in subsequent years. As a consultant, Dr. Langer has worked with a number of organizations, including private businesses, Washington State agencies, Community Youth Services (Olympia), Madigan Army Medical Center and Providence St. Peter Hospital. He has presented some of his work in Solution-Focused Management at international conferences and teaches in the U.S., Europe and Africa.
Linda Gaffney, M.S., has been a therapist and trainer since 1991. She has worked for state agencies and community mental health organizations using solution-focused methods for nearly ten years, most recently as a Staff Counselor for the WA State Department of Corrections, with responsibility for the Southwest Washington region. Linda brings valuable insights from her prior experience in the business and publishing world to her consulting work. She recently wrote a book for the children of incarcerated parents, and continues to volunteer with families of those behind bars.
Scott W. Cubberly, M.S.W., has been a licensed independent social worker since 1988. Starting in 1991, Scott began consulting with Dr. Steve Langer, attended multiple trainings by Dr. Langer and Insoo Kim Berg in the NW, and has co-taught solution-focused principles with Dr. Langer. In 1993, Scott received advanced training at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee, WI. with Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, founders of the solution-focused approach. Scott has 16 years experience working with DCFS/CA referred families, managing the Specialized Foster Care Program at Community Youth Services (CYS) from 1989-1996, and providing FRS, FPS and IFPS services for a total of 9 years. In addition to his consultation work, Scott has a part-time private practice in Olympia and is contracting with CYS to provide FRS and FPS services.
